A Reader’s Dilemma

So, I have a YA novel out from the library right now, a pretty popular one.  I’ve seen half a billion quotes and edits and emotional dissertations on its characters, and I decided to give it a try.

But I’m five chapters in and bored with it.

I feel like a love triangle is already being set up between the only three characters I’ve met, and the world-building is heavy-handed.

Which makes me want to give the rest of the book, and consequently the rest of the series, a pass.

On the other hand, I am still really curious about why everyone (else) seems to love it so much.  And where it goes, if it ever finally gets going.

I also feel like I’m parroting everything my non-Harry-Potter-adoring friends ever said to me.  Because not all my friends love Harry Potter, and yet, somehow, I’m still gracious enough to keep them around.  (Totally kidding!  I’m not that much of a book snob…)

I can’t decide if I should power through the rest of the book and then make the call on continuing the series, or trust my initial reaction and drop it now.  I mean, I do have a huge stack of unread books on my nightstand.  There’s always another book!

So, lovely readers, what do you do in a situation like this?
